CKCS Parent Newsletter - April 2020

CKCS Families:

I am sending this to you at a time of unprecedented events in our country and world’s history.  First and foremost, as your principal, I can honestly say I miss seeing each and every one of our students on a daily basis.  I already have a much greater appreciation of so many things that I previously took for granted. Simple positive interactions with our students each day is something I miss and will appreciate greatly in the future.

All of our families are being affected by this in one way or another but we also realize that each family faces their own unique challenges.  As a school community, we want to do our best to help out in any way possible. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of our staff if there are needs that we can address.

Despite the obvious negatives of our current situation, I also see so many positives.  I would like to give a few “shout outs” to individuals or groups that have gone above and beyond to help others out during this time:

  • Health care providers:  I continue to be in awe over some of my family and friends who go to work each and every day despite concerns for themselves and their families.  If you or your family members are healthcare providers, I thank you. All of our health care providers are true heros.

  • Police, fire and emergency personnel:  Similarly, you continue to answer the calls to support those in need regardless of the situation.

  • Grocery, restaurant and food providers:  We are all appreciative of your work to keep our communities fed and allow them to access food in as safe a manner as possible.

  • Food service staff:  Our school and district food service staff have prepared daily meals for hundreds of district families in need since school closed (including spring break).  The list of families in need continues to grow and they are working hard to provide relief to many.

  • Our children.  As adults we can understand the need for social distancing and how this helps our entire community.  I am impressed with how selfless so many of our youth have been in this process. Even our youngest children seem to understand that this is what is needed now regardless of how difficult it is for them.

I will end with the thought of what is ahead for CKCS.  If it is safe for us all to be together as a school community this school year, we will all rejoice at that moment.  If not, we look forward to brighter days ahead with new (to us) and expanded facilities next school year. The most important thing right now is for all of our families to focus on being safe and supporting each other as much as possible.

CKCS Principal

As we move through this process, please note that primary communication will be coming from the Verona Area School District.  We will update families on an as needed basis on matters that are specific to CKCS. The district webpage has many COVID-19 Resources.

Online Learning

We realize that each family is faced with their own unique challenges as we all learn through online lessons.  This is new for all of us and based on feedback from surveys, we will be making adjustments as needed at each grade level.  We know that this will be an ongoing process and ask for your patience as we all work through this together.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or a member of our student service or administrative team if there are areas we can assist your family. If families are looking for more academic skill practice, IXL is a great tool to use for math and language and is available to all students K-8.

Please note that at this time, the district is not having teachers and students use live online video conferencing for a variety of reasons involving online student safety and privacy.  We appreciate your understanding.

From the District Student Services Team

The Verona Area School District’s K-12 Student Services team is made up of: Counselors, Nurses, Psychologists and Social Workers. We too are adjusting to what our role of providing social and emotional support for students and families means now in this form. As a start, the team is pooling resources, methods, conversations and ideas to share collectively with the VASD community as one wildcat team. There will be a weekly newsletter for families. It’s an effort to build new methods for support and communication while utilizing established connections within the district in this disconnected time.
