This is the image for the news article titled VASD Shares Plan to Make-up Schools Days Missed Due to WeatherAs you know, the recent stretch of inclement weather has resulted in the closure of VASD schools on four days. Wisconsin statute requires public schools in Wisconsin to schedule a minimum number of hours of instruction annually. Those minimum hour totals are:

PreK:     437 hours
Elementary (through grade 6):  1050 hours
Middle School (7-8):   1137 hours
High School:    1137 hours

The high school is currently 24 hours short of compliance with this requirement. And while there still remains a surplus of time scheduled for the elementary and middle schools, we have missed four valuable days of instruction. Given this, we are going to make the following calendar and schedule modifications.

District-Wide:
• Friday, February 22nd will now be a regular school day for all VASD students PreK – 12. This day had previously been scheduled as a staff professional development day.

High School Only:
• Friday, February 22nd will be a normal school day as noted above

• High School (only) will have no more late starts for the remainder of the school year.

• On those previously scheduled late start Mondays (High School only), school will start at 8:10 a.m. instead of 8:30 a.m. The dates for this 8:10 a.m. start time are:
o Monday, February 18th
o Monday, March 4th
o Monday, March 18th
o Monday, April 1st
o Monday, April 15th
o Monday, April 29th
o Monday, May 13th
o Monday, June 10th
o Pick up times for bus riders on the above dates will be 20 minutes earlier than their normal Tuesday – Friday morning pick up time. Drop off times will remain the same.

• The passing period between lunch and 5th / 6th hour class will be shortened by 2 minutes each day starting on Monday, February 11th.

• The last day of school (scheduled to be June 12th) will be a full day for high school only. Previously, the high school was scheduled to end at 1:00 p.m. that day.

We understand these modifications may create inconveniences and / or adversely impact some families and students with specific considerations. If you have a specific situation that is adversely impacted by these changes, please reach out to your student’s counselor and / or your school administrator. If you have general questions, please feel free to reach out to me. My contact information is listed below.

Lastly, if there are more delays / cancellations this year, additional modifications will be needed to fulfill the hours of instruction requirement. Let’s think spring and put the inclement days behind us for this year!

Thank you for taking the time to read through this important notice. Please let me know if you have any questions. I can be reached at the contact information below.
